Through an in-depth analysis of these special topics, students gain a better understanding of the laws and doctrines that govern federal government practices and judicial review. The thesis of this course meets the writing requirement of the higher division. Special subjects in administrative law cover all the basic material typically included in the Administrative Law and Advanced Administrative Law programs. However, this course uses the traditional doctrine of administrative law to examine many of the current, ongoing and unresolved regulatory issues currently facing the country. For example, driverless cars, multi-billion dollar space travel, the rights and obligations of social media companies, the federal government`s response to future pandemics, climate change models, and outdated flood maps are just some of the many areas where regulatory standards will need to be updated and changed in the future. But how and by whom? We will delve deeper into these and many other topics. In order to keep the course topic fresh, to stay up to date with the latest developments in administrative law, and to take into account the interests of students, part of the topic covered in this course varies from year to year. Previous topics included: independent monitoring and investigations; Presidential power, decrees, national emergencies and states of emergency; State benefits and termination of benefits; access to justice; structural reform; and executive privilege.
